With full-time jobs in IT Majors on the side, Ashok Jayanthi and Sriram Chitlur were constantly on the lookout to break away and make a difference & get connected to nature. On a visit to Karnataka Soaps and Detergents factory outlet, they chanced upon sandalwood sapling, and understood that government has liberalized sandalwood cultivation which triggered their interest in agriculture even more. The duo then started to hunt for lands by travelling to rural communities every weekend to explore options to own land. They started to acquire knowledge by contacting established organizations such as the Institute for Wood Sciences, spoke to experts and progressive farmers.
These 2 years were a period of great challenge where the duo began sandalwood cultivation on a piece of land in Rayadurg, AP. This journey was a big learning in many ways about several things right from seed planting, soil management, climatic challenges, labour issues and more. With every challenge they came across, their desire to solve it rose, thus increasing their love for farming. Their mounting understanding about agriculture combined with encouragement from family and friends kept Ashok and Sriram convinced and motivated in their journey.
As Ashok and Sriram continued to hone more knowledge in farming and agriculture, they pursued to scale up their operations. Project Green Gold, the first major project around the cultivation of drumsticks and melia dubia, was initiated during this period. In 2013, Srinath Setty, the third core team member, joined Ashok and Sriram as partner. With agricultural family background, Srinath brought with him extensive knowledge about agricultural inputs. The team initiated Project Green Alpha. It was also during this time that "Hosachiguru" first began taking shape, one crop at a time.
A period of deep growth unfolded in these two years, as the team took to managing a number of farm lands. With the scaling up of the business, the team also brainstormed on how the food that was being produced so sustainably could reach a wider market.
Having completed several projects, the team aimed at providing improved, highly productive and profitable yields to existing farm owners and farming aspirants. Hosachiguru also raised its funding from Mr.Venkat Narayan Konanki. This helped them scale up the process by using appropriate technology in operations, land preparation, drip design, irrigation management, fertigation management, pruning, weeding, etc. Teams are now empowered in making the right decisions at each level of operations and they own the part of the process based on their roles and responsibilities while managing 800+ acres of farm land.
